Heading Within to Bliss

When the sutras speak of Amida and his Land of Bliss lying countless worlds and Buddha-lands distant, it is as though they are seeking to reinforce the impossibility of the notion one might nurture of hoping to reach them by heading ‘out there.’The immeasurable locational gulf speaks of the unattainability of Bliss whatsoever while we hold to any kind of conventional view about its nature. The holding of such concepts that locate Bliss and the Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life within our conditioned realm places both so far beyond our reach that one might better hope to drive to the heart of our own galaxy on the next bus. The aim is to discourage our wrong views about Bliss , and to encourage the right view which is that of Bliss as a state of mind rather than a place. The concepts must be relinquished and to do so we must look within for Amida and His Pure Land. The distance to Bliss can be bridged because in truth it is closer than our own skin. Bliss is not a location but who we are beneath the heap of wrong views and perceptions. Amida is no further from us than our next breath or our heartbeat because fundamentally Amida is our true self at the heart of the egotistical storm we have whipped up around ourselves. We have simply forgotten that this mask we are wearing is a mask and have attached such solidity and impermanence to empty forms that we have no more idea we have fallen asleep. But the sleeper can and will awaken. As we chant the Nembutsu, so we rouse our True Self, calling Amida forth that we realise who we really are. Our rebirth in Bliss is our awakening to this truth, and a reality that lies lightyears beyond anything we can ever conceive. Gate, Gate, Paragate, Para Sam gate Bodhi svaha!
Gone, Gone, Gone beyond Gone utterly beyond!
